Graphic Pens

Erasing UltraPen

To Erase Is Human

Even scribes using digital pens can make mistakes. The solution: a digital eraser.

The Wacom Erasing UltraPen works with Wacom's graphics tablets to give digital sketchers a margin of error. The pen provides 256 pressure levels for its tip and eraser, which works like the old rubber standby--the harder you press, the more it erases.

And if you're working on software that doesn't support the eraser, you can use it to select and delete text or cells. Press and drag to select text, then lift the eraser to delete.

Fractal Design Dabbler 1.1a, SmartSketch, Photoshop 3.04 and QFX are among the graphics programs that support the erasing pen. It doesn't require a cord or battery, and you can program a side switch to launch a macro.

The Erasing UltraPen is 9mm in diameter and weighs one-third of an ounce. The side switch lets you customize pressure levels.

The erasing pen ships with Wacom's 4x5-inch ArtPad II and ArtZ II pads, which come in four sizes: 6x8, 12x12, 12x18 and 18x25 inches. ArtPad II, $174.99; ArtZ II, $389.99 to $2,449.99.

Exabyte 1500

Store More Than 1GB

The Exabyte 1500 is a turnkey Plug-and-Play tape drive solution that costs under $200 and lets you store up to 1.3GB through double data compression.

The DC2000 minicartridge supports QIC-3010 and QIC-3020 recording standards.

Aimed at the home or small office user, the Exabyte 1500 has a maximum 9.3MB per minute transfer rate if you use the included 2Mbps accelerator card. The actual tranfer rate, however, depends on your system.

Because it supports two quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) standards, the unit provides an upgrade path as your requirements grow.

The Exabyte 1500's native capacity is 340MB in QIC-3010 mode and 680MB in QIC-3020. Data compression software doubles those capacities.

The 3.5-inch drive is packaged to fit in 5.25 form factors, and includes backup software, an accelerator card, cables and a preformatted Exatape MC3000XL mini data cartridge. $199 (street).
